Meet Ubuntu for Android: The Next Step in Ubuntu’s Multi-Device Plan

Meet ‘Ubuntu for Android’ – a side-by-side pairing of the Android and Ubuntu OSes on a single phone, the latest part of Canonical’s ‘multi-device’ future for Ubuntu.

When in your pocket the phone is the same as it always was: an Android device. But when the connected to a monitor (by way of a nifty looking dock) it launches into a fully fledged Ubuntu desktop running the Unity interface.

Both OSes share the same kernel – so this isn’t a case of an ‘Ubuntu’ app running atop Android or vice versa. Both run at the same time on the same device. The net result of this is a super efficient workflow.

Google Is Planning Pricey Glasses With An Augmented Reality Heads-Up Display, May Sell Them By Year's End

You've got to hand it to Google. They don't let silly things like "feasibility" and "finances" get in the way of an awesome idea. The New York Times is reporting that Google is working on a set of glasses with the specs of a smartphone, including 3G and 4G data connectivity, GPS, a camera, and oh yeah, a heads-up display.

The glasses, which are supposedly under development at Google's not-so-secret Google X lab, would cost about as much as a smartphone, so they likely won't be for the light wallet. That being said, if they work as advertised, they could still sell plenty. The glasses would use the heads-up display to overlay the wearer's world with information, from descriptions of surrounding buildings to showing you where your friends are nearby via Latitude.

The glas...

PlayBook OS 2.0 finally released

RIM has released BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 for its 7-inch tablet, finally adding much-needed features like a native email app and social networking integration, as well as turning your BlackBerry phone into a remote control. The free upgrade is available today, bringing with it select Android app compatibility; RIM says the BlackBerry App World is also being updated with “a range” of Android apps that will work with the PlayBook.

Although the PlayBook was first put on sale in April 2011, RIM opted to release the tablet without its own email abilities. Instead, users who wanted on-device email access had to tether the PlayBook to their BlackBerry smartphone; otherwise the only way to access messages was through the browser. RIM’s motivations were seemingly speed to market and an attempt to spur handset sales as well, but the strategy backfired.

That’s been addressed now with OS 2.0, which also brings a new Print To Go app, a b...

The Pirate Bay could be blocked in UK after High Court ruling

A ruling from the England and Wales High Court has determined that both the users and operators of The Pirate Bay have violated the copyrights of music labels, which could eventually lead to the filesharing site being blocked in the UK. While the users themselves were ruled to have committed copyright infringement, Justice Richard Arnold also determined that the operators of the site "induce, incite, or persuade" that infringement, and "are jointly liable for the infringements committed by users." This ruling could potentially lead to TPB being blocked altogether in the UK, should the nine record labels included in the decision seek a court order forcing the UK's major internet service providers to do just that, as is expected. Many of those ISPs have already said that they would comply with any such order, with Virgin Media telling The Register that "as a responsible ISP, we will comply with any court order addre...
